Cavtat Swim Spots

Cavtat is renowned for its variety of swimming spots, each offering a unique experience. Below, you'll find a guide to our favorite swim spots around the town.

Where to Swim in Cavtat

Below is a map of the most popular swim spots in Cavtat, Croatia.

While you can swim almost anywhere you can access the water in Cavtat, we recommend avoiding the area directly in front of the main promenade due to boat traffic, which can make swimming there dangerous.

In many of these places, you’ll find beach chairs and umbrellas for rent (more info on that below) and in all of these spots, a cool Croatian law applies where you’re welcome to throw a towel onto the rocks and spend a day lounging and swimming for no fee at all.

Safety Tips for Swimming in Cavtat

While you can swim almost anywhere you can access the water in Cavtat, we recommend avoiding the area directly in front of the main promenade due to boat traffic, which can make swimming there dangerous.

  • Watch for Rocks: Many swimming areas in Cavtat have rocky underbellies. Always be cautious and avoid diving unless you're absolutely sure of the water depth and absence of submerged rocks.

  • Sea Urchins: These creatures are common in the Adriatic Sea and can cause painful injuries if stepped on. We suggest wearing water shoes to protect your feet.

  • Boat Traffic: Some areas can be busy with boats. Always make sure to make yourself visible to avoid any accidents. Using brightly colored swim caps or floatation devices can help increase your visibility.

  • First-Time Swimmers: For those not accustomed to swimming in natural settings like the ocean, it can be a bit overwhelming due to the presence of marine life, waves, and rocks. If you're new to swimming in such environments, consider using a life jacket or floatation device, especially if you're feeling jet-lagged or anxious.

Additional Tips

  • Cavtat's crystal-clear waters are perfect for snorkeling, so consider bringing your gear to explore underwater.

  • After swimming, there are numerous spots along the promenade where you can relax and enjoy the sun or grab a bite to eat, making it easy to spend a full day by the water. Check out Cavtat’s bars and restaurants.

Sunbed and Umbrella Rentals

Many of the popular swimming spots in Cavtat offer the convenience of sunbed and umbrella rentals, allowing you to fully relax and enjoy the beach without having to bring your own beach gear.

Rental Availability

Sunbeds and umbrellas are available for rent directly at the beaches. In 2024, the cost for renting a sunbed is between €7-10, while an umbrella (or parasol) can be rented for €3-5.

Rental Process

You cannot reserve a sunbed or umbrella in advance; they are available on a first-come, first-served basis once you arrive at the beach. Typically, there will be a designated rental station where you can arrange your rental. If no such station is visible, local vendors, such as those selling gelato, often handle these rentals, and you can inquire with them.

Using the Beach Facilities

While renting a sunbed and umbrella can make your beach day more comfortable, especially if you plan to stay for an extended period, it's not a requirement for enjoying the beach. You are free to swim at any public beach and use a towel if you prefer a more simplified setup. If you find an unoccupied chair, it's generally better to look for an open spot on the sand rather than moving chairs around, to respect the belongings of other beachgoers.

This rental system allows you flexibility in how you enjoy Cavtat's beautiful beaches, whether you choose to rent for comfort or opt for a towel on the sand for a more natural experience.
