Getting Oriented

As you embark on your adventure in Croatia, it's essential to familiarize yourself with the geographic layout. Here are a few tips to get oriented.

Dubrovnik Airport, your likely point of entry, is located in the southeast of the country, near the Montenegro border. A short 5-minute drive northwest along the coast from the airport brings you to Cavtat. Continuing past Cavtat for another 10 minutes, you’ll pass through several smaller towns such as Mlini and Srebreno. These towns are nestled below road level, making them less visible from the drive. After traveling through these areas, a further 10-15 minute drive leads you to the historic Dubrovnik Old Town.

If you’re inclined to explore the Konavle region, you would head in the opposite direction from the airport. Instead of turning right towards Cavtat and Dubrovnik, turning left will take you into the heart of Konavle. This region is celebrated for its rustic charm and includes picturesque villages like Cilipi, which are replete with interesting sights and activities. The Konavle region stretches from the airport down to the border with Montenegro, offering a rich exploration of rural Croatian culture.

For those planning to extend their journey to Split, you can drive northwest from Dubrovnik for approximately 3 hours. Alternatively, a scenic water ferry ride, which takes about 5 hours, provides a breathtaking view of the Croatian coastline and its stunning landscapes. This route is an excellent way to appreciate the coastal beauty and varied sceneries of Croatia. Find the spots you plan to visit on this convenient map, below.
